NA Range Map
Salticidae of North America
Richman, Cutler & Hill 2012

Of the nearly 100 species of Habronattus spiders in North America one third have ornamental fringing on their first leg (leg I) and a modified third leg (leg III). This large assemblage of jumping spiders has in turn been divided into two smaller groups: the coecatus group and the viridipes group. The present species H. schlingeri is one of nine species assigned to the coecatus group. Five species in this group are endemic to California and the Baja peninsula of Mexico. H. schlingeri adult males exhibits a prominent spur-like leg III ornament that is unique to this species (see video).
